vextract

vextract recovers virtual machine disk images from Veeam backup files. It reads the backup files directly, without Veeam installed, and it is built for the cases the backup software itself can no longer open, such as repositories that are damaged, incomplete, or partially overwritten.

What it does

• Reads full backup files (.vbk) and incremental backup files (.vib) directly.
• Reconstructs each virtual disk in the backup and writes it out as a standard disk image.
• Applies incremental backups in date order to bring a disk to its most recent recoverable state.
• Verifies every recovered block against the checksums recorded in the backup.
• Continues past damaged regions of a backup file and recovers everything that remains verifiable.

Every run produces a plain report of what was recovered and of any range that could not be verified, so the result is never silently wrong.

What you need

• The Veeam backup files: the full backup (.vbk) and any incremental files (.vib).
• Enough free disk space for the extracted disk images.

How to use it

1. Download vextract and run it. The program is a single file and does not require installation.
2. Select the backup file and the disk to recover.
3. Choose where the disk image is written and start the run.
4. Review the report when the run finishes. It lists what was recovered and anything that could not be verified.

Your backups are never modified

vextract opens backup files read-only and never writes to them. Recovered data is verified block by block, and data that cannot be verified is reported rather than approximated.
