Overview

DedupCopy is a Windows and Mac utility built by the engineers at Datarecovery.com to solve a problem we run into constantly: copying large amounts of data that’s full of duplicates. Photos that live in three folders, backups of backups, the same document saved a dozen times — it all adds up and it all costs money to store.

DedupCopy walks through your source drive, fingerprints every file, and copies only the files it hasn’t seen before. When it finds a duplicate, it doesn’t copy it again — it records where the match already lives and moves on. The result is a single, complete, deduplicated copy of your data at the destination, plus a full report of exactly what was copied and what was skipped.

We built it for our own forensic and recovery work, where being sure the copy is complete and correct isn’t optional. Now we’re making it available to everyone.

How it works

  • Fingerprints every file using a fast 128-bit content hash. Two files with the same fingerprint are identical, bit for bit.
  • Copies unique files once. The first time DedupCopy sees a piece of content, it copies it. Every later copy of that same content is recognized as a duplicate and skipped.
  • Verifies every copy. After each file is written, DedupCopy reads it back and re-checks the fingerprint against the original. A file only counts as copied if it matches exactly — so you never end up with a silently corrupted copy.
  • Keeps a database. Everything DedupCopy does is tracked in a small database, which means it can pick up right where it left off if you stop it, and it always knows what it’s already copied.
  • Writes a full report. When it finishes, DedupCopy drops a plain-language report at the destination listing every file it copied, every duplicate it found and where the match lives, anything it skipped, and any errors — a complete record of the job.

What makes it different

  • Verified, not just copied. Most copy tools move your files and trust that it worked. DedupCopy re-reads and re-checks every file after writing it, so you have proof the copy is good.
  • Built for real storage savings. By storing each unique file only once, DedupCopy can dramatically shrink a copy that’s full of duplicates — without compression and without giving anything up.
  • Resumable. Stop it anytime and start again later. It remembers what it’s done and continues from there.
  • A complete record. The report tells you exactly what happened to every file, which matters when the data is important.
  • Made by recovery professionals. DedupCopy comes out of the same shop that handles data recovery and computer forensics for businesses, individuals, and law enforcement. We built it to the standard we hold our own work to.
  • EV code-signed. Every DedupCopy build is signed with an Extended Validation certificate, so Windows SmartScreen and macOS Gatekeeper trust it right out of the gate.

Who it’s for

  • Anyone consolidating multiple drives or folders down to one clean copy
  • Businesses looking to cut storage costs by removing redundant data
  • IT professionals managing backups and archives
  • Anyone who wants a copy they can actually trust, with a record to back it up

Good to know

DedupCopy runs on Windows and Mac and copies from any accessible drive or folder to another. It’s built for speed on modern hardware — solid-state and NVMe drives — but works with any storage. There’s nothing to configure to get started: pick a source, pick a destination, and go.
