Maxtor Data Recovery and Hard Drive Failure Information

June 23, 2014

While Maxtor drives are not necessarily more prone to failure than other hard drives from major manufacturers, Datarecovery.com has created individual tools to treat some of the most common issues that affect these devices.

Some of the most well-known Maxtor devices include:

  • The Maxtor OneTouch Series
  • Maxtor Shared Storage / Shared Storage 2
  • Maxtor Fusion Web Servers
  • Maxtor Basic Personal Storage Products
  • Various Desktop Hard Drive Models

Each of our laboratories is completely outfitted to recover data from Maxtor drives and RAID arrays, and we have technology for advanced microcode repair, read/write head replacement, and other advanced processes. We have a Class 5 clean room in every facility, and unlike many of our competitors, we only operate full-service locations. Datarecovery.com never outsources Maxtor hard drive recovery cases.

Data Loss on Maxtor Hard Drives and Storage Systems

Below are some of the most common failure scenarios for Maxtor drives. If you notice any signs of a failure or if you would like to speak with a data recovery specialist, call us today at 1.800.237.4200.

  • Firmware and Microcode Issues – A hard drive’s firmware contains extremely specific information that allows the device to operate efficiently. This includes information on read/write head spacing, temperature thresholds, and lists of inaccessible sectors, and firmware corruption can completely prevent a drive from working correctly. If your hard drive is experiencing firmware issues, your computer might identify it with an incorrect model number. You may see too much or too little free space, and the drive may display physical symptoms (see “failed read/write heads” below). It’s very important to keep your drive turned off, since these symptoms could precede a more substantial mechanical failure.
  • Overheating – Some early Maxtor models may have been susceptible to overheating, but this issue has been completely resolved in recent generations. Even so, your hard drive may overheat if your computer does not have an adequate cooling system or if you operate an external hard drive (such as the OneTouch series) without allowing space for ventilation.
  • Failed Read/Write Heads – A hard drive’s heads can fail for a number of reasons including firmware damage, excessive jostling and vibration, or gradual mechanical degradation due to drive aging. Symptoms can include clicking and whirring sounds.

While recovery rates can differ substantially from one model to the next, we offer overall success rates of over 98 percent for standard failure scenarios (fire damage and water infiltration can lower the chances of success substantially, but Datarecovery.com is one of the only companies offering full services for extensively damaged Maxtor media). Due to the age of most Maxtor drives, it’s important to immediately treat any damaged or failed drive in order to optimize the chances of a full recovery.
